After the not-quite-ideal end to 2019 running season, I needed to rethink my training plans. For last few years, my training has primarily followed the plans laid out by Jeff Galloway, quite rigidly in earlier years and then somewhat loosely in recent years. Perhaps the problem has been all the travel, and resulting deviation from the training plans. Who knows? In any case, maybe it is time to try something different.
I happened upon Matt Fitzgerald’s 80/20 running recently while killing some time at the local library. His approach resonated with me, and since I was questioning my current training structure anyway, I am going to give Matt’s training plan a try. Long story short, I have signed up for a spring marathon, the Lake Wobegon Trail Marathon. I will use his 18 week plan to train for the race, starting in January. In the meanwhile, I decided to try out the week one runs to test my fitness.
Today, I did the Speed Play run – 1-minute hard intervals with plenty of breaks. As it turned out, the hard interval WAS hard! Hopefully, my fitness improves as these runs become more frequent.
